As this year draws to a close, it's time to take a stroll down our homeschool learning lane and reflect on what we have achieved in 2023. This year brought forth not just academic growth but a profound transformation in our approach to education as a homeschoolers.
1. Letting Go of Traditional School Mentality:
Have you heard of the term 'deschooling'? It's basically weaning yourself off from traditional schooling. Well this year I hadn't realised I needed further deschooling. I accepted that my children were still learning by having discussions, asking questions and showing curiosity for things that interest them. Embracing the fact that home education operates on a different wavelength than traditional schooling was fantastic. I felt less stressed and more motivated. It's okay to break free from the conventional mould; in fact, it's downright liberating.
2. Consistency Beats Intensity:
In the world of homeschooling, consistency is the secret to success. A straightforward routine—Arabic, English, and math in the morning, followed by outdoor adventures—became our compass. Originally I would spend a lot of time on a topic making sure they understood every aspect, but it usually resulted in tears and frustration. Looking back, my children not only met their targets but surpassed them. The key? Small, consistent steps leading to substantial achievements.
3. Growth in Learning and Development:
Witnessing my children evolve in not only learning, but growth and development too, has been the highlight. They've not only mastered the art of tidying up after themselves but have conquered once-dreaded math and reading challenges. They have overcome challenges; what once was a struggle has now become easy and straightforward. Their communication skills have blossomed, and I have noticed their level of confidence when expressing themselves.
4. Main Topics of Interest:
This year unveiled my child's passion for extinct and endangered animals, past civilizations, and global warming. To support her interest, we explored museums, conducted research, and watched relevant documentaries, nurturing her fervour for knowledge. She also discovered a talent for art, a budding passion we're excited to nurture.
In conclusion, homeschooling in 2023 wasn't just about academic milestones; it was a holistic journey of self-discovery, growth, and the joy of learning. Here's to another year of adventures in education!
