Ramadan for Kids

Published on 12 March 2024 at 22:27

As adults we prepare ahead of time of this blessed month. From food, shopping, clothes, to Quran, Islamic books, maybe save Islamic lecture series to listen to throughout Ramadan.

But how can we get our children to look forward to this great month with eagerness and excitement?

In this blog post, we will explore some fun and engaging ways to involve our children in Ramadan, that will InshaAllah create a lifelong attachment and good memories for years to come.

Planning for Ramadan

Considering your family's unique needs and objectives is key.

Ask yourself:

- What do I envision Ramadan being for my family?

- How can we balance our spiritual and educational goals?

- Should we maintain our usual homeschool routine, or adapt it for Ramadan?

Talk about it

The best and simplest way is to talk about Ramadan and why you are looking forward to it.

Encourage questions, share stories and interesting facts about Ramadan. Children can sometimes ask really thought-provoking questions and make us see things from a different angle.

Story Time

Unlike a decade ago, we now have many great and relatable Ramadan stories aimed at young children, with fun illustrations and simple language. Along with stories from the Hadith, we can bring information to the level of our children so they truly connect with this blessed month.

Some book recommendations:

- Lailah's Lunchbox

- Rami the Ramadan Cat

- The Most Powerful Night

- Ramadan in Space

- Moon's Ramadan

Crafts and Activities

Through crafts and activities, children learn in a more fun and engaging way. The hands on, interactive learning is the best way for children to feel joy in what they learn and also retain that information. It also encourages curiosity and more questions that leads to more understanding.

Stay Flexible

And remember... flexibility is a hallmark of homeschooling. Embrace it, especially if you have younger children. Use this time to explore the richness of Ramadan without the constraints of a strict academic schedule. When my children were younger, we set aside formal studies during Ramadan to fully immerse ourselves in its spiritual essence.

As the children grow older and participate in fasting and nightly prayers, our homeschooling routine adapts accordingly. The beauty of homeschooling lies in the freedom to tailor our days to align with the blessings of Ramadan. Whether it's adjusting study times or embracing night time prayers, homeschooling allows us to fully embrace this beautiful month.
